Cheers

go the otorahonga (?) - taumarunui -national park - waiuru way. It'll knock
up to 3 hours off a trip down state highway 1... From Waiuru just follow
SH1 all the way to PN. Should take around 6 hours of driving time, give or
take a few minutes.

I don't think that way is any quicker. It's about 1-1.5 hours to Hamilton
from Auckland. From there about 2 hours to either Taupo or Taumarunui.

Taupo - Waioru or Taumarunui - Waioru is about the same time as well.

There is only one stress free way to get to Palmy and it isn't SH1

Auck to Ngaruawahia through Pirongia to Otorohanga to National Park
across through Ohakune to Waiouru and down SH1 to Palm North.

After doing the trip Chch to Auck and back 5 times a year for 7 years
- it's the only way I would recommend unless you want to join the
stressed idiots trying to get through Hamilton and Cambridge and
battle the tourists and logging trucks around Taupo. You only go
through Taupo if you want to have a decent Coffee at The Replete Cafe.

I should have added that to my post. The question was "What's the shortest
route to drive from Auckland to Palmerston North". The ngaruawahia -
pirongia - otorohanga - taumarunui - nat park - ohakune - waiuru is by far
the shortest distance and you don't have to deal with the bullshit that
comes with driving on SH1.

I like that way too. It generally has less traffic. Mind you if you get
stuck behind a truck there are few passing places for quite long stretches.

NB. Not recommended if your trip takes you through the
Otorohanga-Ngaruawahia stretch any festive evening.

Cheers for the help everyone.

I'm going down about 4am Saturday (bleuch!) and returning the same
afternoon so trucks should be the only problem going down, and I have
no problem tucking in behind a truck and leaving the navigation and
corner speeds to someone else (even if I did have a really interesting
moment trying to keep up with an empty milk tanker through the Dome
Valley one morning).

Missing Taupo will be nice, coming north the haul from the hairpins at
the lake through to the town always seems to take forever.

Thanks,
Gary.

Drive safely and keep your wits about you. That is a tediously long
trip to do both ways in one day.

That time in the morning it shoudl be a good fast trip. Return in one
day - I have done it (and raced bikes during the day) but wouldn't do
it again by choice as it was a very long and tiring day. Stop for a
kip on the way back for an hour or so will help a lot.

Yes, agreed. Auckland - Ngaruawahia - Pirongia - Otorohanga - Te Kuiti -
Tauramanui - National Park - Ohakune (turn off just before Raetihi) -
Waiouru etc.

Don't look on the map and think that going Raetihi - Wanganui - Bulls -
Palmy looks quicker - it isn't unless you can fly.

Chch to Auckland 5 times a year!? That's a whole lot of driving. I don't
envy that at all.
